Toronto Mayor Rob Ford surely understands the long-held sentiment; a week is a long time in politics. If the compelling storylines emerging from the opening week of the BPL season are any indication then we are certainly in for another peach of a season in Englands top tier. Here are my highlights from a week that was. A WINDOW TURNS INTO A REVOLVING DOOR - Going into the transfer window Arsene Wenger let everyone know the red half of London was in for some serious spending this summer. Nearly two months in were still waiting. Those who barked Anglo Saxon-riddled expletives at the economics graduate following a feeble effort in Arsenals opener were left scratching their heads after the name Johan Cabaye was added to the ever-growing list of failed bids. As an encore yesterday, the club announced ‘No Mas in their pursuit of Liverpools Luis Suarez with all signs their immediate attention was now on signing ex-Gunner Mathieu Flamini. Let go by Milan at the end of last season Flamini walked out on Arsenal at the end of the 2007-08 season. I guess at this rate RVP will be back in an Arsenal shirt circa summer 2018. AWAY THE FANS - On the eve of the season Premier League CEO Richard Scudamore stated the BPLs desire to increase the attendance of travelling supporters. The campaign got off to an ideal start with the league announcing that over opening weekend eight of 10 visiting clubs completely sold out their ticket allocations. The affection from the terraces must be rubbing off on the pitch. Of those 10 matches fully half of them resulted in victory for the visitors. The most improbable had the 3,000 strong Aston Villa support suffer a collective case of 2012-13 campaign amnesia come the final whistle at the Emirates. DEJA VU? - When the blue half of Manchester claimed the most unlikely of BPL crowns on the final day of the season they started their 2011-12 campaign with a Monday night home fixture. Swansea was the opponent that day in a match that saw City run out as very convincing 4-0 winners. Fast forward to Manchester Citys 2013-14 opener and the destruction of Newcastle by a similar score Monday night. Adding further intrigue, David Silva and Sergio Aguero featured on the score sheet against Newcastle as they both did against Swansea on opening day 2011. GLT 1: CHELSEA 0 - It was Frank Lampards goal that wasnt versus Germany at the 2010 World Cup which swung the FIFA debate on goal line technology. With GLT making its introduction in the BPL this season how ironic it was that on opening weekend Hawkeye was put into full effect following a corner from the Chelsea midfielder. Hulls Allan McGregor did just enough to prevent the ball from fully going over the line after Lampards corner was headed goal-bound by Branislav Ivanovic. If it had been a goal, referee Jon Moss would have been alerted within a second by a buzzer triggering on his watch. I wonder if Wenger has a similar watch for when Arsenal finally manage to land a player during the transfer window. GNASHER LUIS HEARTS LIVERPOOL - Having made the mandatory apology to his teammates on the eve of Liverpool opening their campaign, how comforting it must have been for some of the Kop faithful to bump into Suarez as he emerged from a car outside Anfield ahead of kick off against Stoke last Saturday. Agitating for a move all summer long only a complete cynic would suggest Suarez decided to take his daughter with him to prevent opportunity for any of the Liverpool fans to vent their true feelings on their star striker. Suarez who is halfway through a 10-match ban for biting Ivanovic towards the tail end of last season will only be available to play for Liverpool or [insert Champions League club here] at the end of September. No confirmation if Suarez bit a team mate in training Thursday after news leaked out Arsenal had finally abandoned their £40,000,001 pursuit of the man with the most infamous teeth in all of world football. HARDLY A “PITCHURE BOOK” STORY - Confined to the bench as Manchester United took to the Swansea pitch, “Want-away Wayne” cut a pitiful self as he watched the champions take the 2-0 lead. Even though the £250,000-a-week striker featured in both of Uniteds later goals Rooneys mood didnt improve after he was introduced just after the hour mark. Wayne opted not to join in the goal celebrations, preferring a shoulder shrugging trudge back to the halfway line instead of joining in with his team mates as they performed a touch line love in with David Moyes after RVP had claimed his second goal of the day. Rooney also stayed well away from the team celebration after Danny Welbeck scored Uniteds fourth. No prizes for guessing what action shots from the Liberty Stadium made the back pages of the tabloids last Sunday. HOME BUT NOT ALONE - Such was the “Jose Effect” Sunday as this most venerable part of West London awoke much earlier than usual. The ground filled up a good hour ahead of kick off as no one in the 41,000 capacity crowd wanted to miss out on the Happy Ones return to the Stamford Bridge bench. Even Roman Abramovich couldnt resist the Mourinho lure as the owner paid a pre-match visit to the Chelsea dressing room. Abramovich even featured in the match day programme, a first as the club celebrate a decade of Roman Rule. It was Mourinho, though, who held the fans breathless as they waited for him to emerge from the tunnel. The teenage-type adulation which followed, as he took his place on the bench, was in marked contrast to the wholly divisive Stamford Bridge scenes from last season. START AS YOU MEAN TO GO ON THEN - The BPLs very own walking and talking stick of dynamite just cant help himself. One game in and Ian Holloway is already on an FA misconduct charge following incendiary words directed at the referee after his Crystal Palace opened their campaign with defeat at home to Spurs. Holloway was back to his emotional self in mid-week with ill-judged comments about Chelsea not conceding a late penalty against Aston Villa - Holloway outwardly questioning if the refs had it on for the less glamorous sides. The Crystal Palace manager freely admits hes not at his best when he doesnt get what he wants, advising the media if they didnt believe him then all they had to do was ask his Mum. VALUE FOR MONEY – The last word has to go to the man who was so instrumental in ensuring Sir Alex Ferguson received the perfect retirement gift. Robin Van Persies contribution last season made a complete mockery of the widely-held adage players need a season or two to bed in and get used to their new surroundings. Scoring in his Old Trafford debut, the Dutchman potted goals from near and far all season long and with them secured a 13th BPL title for Ferguson. After scoring in Fergies final game in charge, last seasons top scorer needed all of 33 minutes to get off the mark this season. If Gareth Bale is worth upwards of €100m to Real Madrid what mathematical model do you use to calculate Robin Van Persies value to Manchester United? Anyone got Einsteins phone number. Im sure you heard Peter Forsbergs comments last week regarding Canadian referees in the gold medal game. Seems to me that he was questioning the integrity and impartiality. http://www.cheapecco.us/. Orlandos Glen Davis tried to get in the way, only to be driven back into the padding under the basket as the Pelicans forward slammed home a windmill jam. Cheap Ecco Shoes Online . -- LeGarrette Blount wasnt satisfied with three short touchdown runs, not against a team coming off the second greatest comeback in playoff history. Cheap Ecco Shoes . - After three days of light, make that very light, workouts, Team Irvin and Team Carter are ready for tonights Pro Bowl. One has 10 major honours to his name, celebrated his 100th cap for his country with a vital goal against world champions Germany in October and has started a Champions League final. The other captained a title winning team last season, was the Netherlands player of the year in the same campaign and is behind only Michael Owen and Alan Shearer on a list of Newcastles record signings. But it seems certain that they wont both be in the Premier League next season, at least not with their current clubs. The two North East giants are on a precipice. Both in the relegation zone after Norwichs win at West Brom; the Canaries remain in the mix themselves, Aston Villa are stranded and the rest look a long way off.In short, at least one of them will go down. This weekends Tyne-Wear derby could well decide which and, as a result, may be the most important of the 156 the two have contested in more than a century of rivalry.John OShea, of course, is the man who won 10 trophies - including five Premier Leagues with Manchester United - has started more than 100 times for the Republic of Ireland and began the 2009 Rome final against Barcelona. He may be fighting for his place in the Sunderland team at the moment, but its hard to see Sam Allardyce leaving him out this weekend. OShea is a proven winner, the stalwart of three Sunderland escapes and, most importantly, he has the most unbelievable stranglehold over Newcastle. Shay Given tells us what its like to prepare for and play in a Tyne-Wear derby between Newcastle and Sunderland They have never beaten the Irishman. Ever. In total his record against them reads: played 20, won 15, drawn 5, lost 0. The only problem for me, as I arrived at Sunderlands Academy of Light training ground this week, was he didnt want to talk about it.He wasnt being difficult, it was more a modest, focused, professional way of not wanting to say something to motivate the enemy in derby week - but it didnt help the reporter!Id rather not even mention it, he explained, smiling. Why would I when I can go under the radar? Thats how I prefer it.I pressed him a little bit about the times, early in his career, when he was part of Manchester United teams that were so good they didnt just beat Newcastle, often they thrashed them.He was part of 5-3, 5-1, 6-0 and 6-2 wins in those early days. Its the 6-2, in a game famous for a magnificent Paul Scholes hat-trick, that gets him talking. Youve no divine right [to beat Newcastle]. You cant go thinking, Its Newcastle, well win because we won the last six. The attitude and commitment have got to be right. John OShea That was OSheas first visit to St James Park. He made a goal that day with a rampaging run down the left, going past two before smashing a shot against the bar that fell nicely for Ryan Giggs to score.Shay Given [in goal for Newcastle] always tells me he got a hand on the shot but Im not so sure, he says, again with a smile and with his guard dropping slightly. But look, its obviously a very, very proud record, especially for a Sunderland player. Fingers crossed I can keep hold of it.Beating Newcastle with Manchester United is one thing, doing it a record six times in a row with Sunderland is, in many ways, far more remarkable. The crucial question is, will the record effect the two sets of players this weekend? Will it count for anything? In a sense it will, but youve no divine right. You cant go thinking, Its Newcastle, well win because we won the last six. The attitude and commitment have got to be right, the Irishman added. An in-depth look at how Rafael Benitez is training his Newcastle side for their must-win Tyne-Wear derby this weekend This brings us on to Newcastle.dddddddddddd A couple of days after talking to OShea, I sat down with Georginio Wijnaldum - PSV Eindhovens title winning captain, player of the year and Newcastles third biggest signing behind Owen and Shearer. He was searingly honest about what he sees as the reasons for the teams poor form, and the need for Rafael Benitez to be parachuted in to save them after Steve McClarens sacking.I feel bad and I feel responsible, says Wijnaldum, addressing McClarens departure. In football, its not always fair. They fire the trainer because they cant fire us players.Undoubtedly a squad targeting a top eight finish, after Mike Ashley loosened the purse strings in the summer, has under-performed.Maybe its focus, maybe its mental, maybe its confidence - its difficult to explain. Sometimes we need to be harder on each other, when times are hard you have to speak more - especially the senior players. Jamie Redknapp previews two derbies on Super Sunday as Newcastle host Sunderland and Manchester City face United. I feel bad and I feel responsible. In football, its not always fair. They fire the trainer because they cant fire us players. Georginio Wijnaldum on McClaren sacking You work out who you can yell at and who you have to be easy with. We can do it more.Wijnaldum clearly liked working for McClaren but says it has lifted the squad to have a name like Rafael Benitez take charge. But the focus is on stopping Sunderland from extending their record run, easing their own relegation fears in the process.Everywhere I go, fans talk to me about Sunderland, says Wijnaldum.Theyve won the last six, for the fans and for us, we have to stop it.The Dutchman, who has scored nine goals, all of them at St James Park, in his first Premier League season, is relishing the prospect of his first Tyne-Wear derby on home turf. Hes looking forward to having the crowd on his side. John OShea is looking forward to having it against him. Sunderland have won their last six Tyne-Wear derbies, can they make it six on Super Sunday? This is what you become a professional for, the Black Cats captain said. To have the animosity and anger cranked up to 100% against you and to have to fight against that. Its a huge game. Ultimately its three points but with the situation were both in it looks like being a lot more than that. I cant wait.Catch the full interview with Georginio Wijnaldum and John OShea , ahead of live coverage of the Tyne-Wear derby, on Super Sunday, 12.30pm, Sky Sports 1 HD.
